The Square of Adanzunji was one of the main stages along the slave trade route and the departure point for the troops of the Kingdom of Abomey during the reign of King Ghezo (1818-1858). Before war, the king would ask his ancestors (the spirits of past kings and dignitaries) for assistance in leading victorious attacks. This ceremony always took place on the eve of battle as decreed by the king. Seated in front of the palace, the king would listen to war chiefs and riders make their oaths of courage on the "forum of courage", swearing to overcome their enemies.
